THE LAST OF US PART II
The Last of Us Part II is an upcoming action-adventure third-person shooter video game that is developed by Naughty Dog and will be published by Sony Interactive Entertainment.
It all started in September 2013 when the spread of a modern fungal plague nearly decimated the entire human race. Two survivors, Joel and Ellie survive their way to find a possible cure across the remains of the country, fighting against hostile humans and cannibalistic infected mutants. This direct sequel will pick up the story five years after the events of the original game.
This survival horror game will now focus on Ellie, who is now 19 years old. We haven’t seen much of Joel but Ellie’s ‘old man’ will probably stick around. We know that the weathered Texan smuggler stopped the Fireflies from performing the lethal operation on Ellie that could have resulted in the cure of the Cordyceps Brain Infection but what we don’t know is if Ellie bought Joel’s lie. She seemed really angry and intended to “ kill every last of them” in the game’s first trailer. She has even managed to form relationships with Dina and Jesse. However, they are not safe as they face constant threats from the infected and somehow, Ellie comes into conflict with a mysterious Christian cult. The game sets place in Seattle, Washington and throughout the storyline, Ellie faces consequences of her actions but mentally and physically.
We had a chance to dive into the game and enjoy the gameplay at Sony’s E3 presentation. Very much like the original game, players can use firearms and improvised weapons to defend themselves against the Infected. Part II also allows players to jump and climb higher whilst playing as the protagonist Ellie who’s more agile than the Joel. It also introduces guard dogs that are controlled by artificial intelligence and can track the player’s scent. ‘Listen mode’ makes its return where players can locate enemies through an enhanced sense of hearing and contiguous awareness. Players can also upgrade skills in a skill tree by collecting supplements.
The game is fairly well-received but it drew some criticism for its violence. It’s even reportedly banned in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. According to VG247, one Reddit user reported that PlayStation Support said any game that does not appear in a regional store has been banned by the competent authorities of the country and they can not do anything regarding that. Jim Ryan, the president of Sony Interactive Entertainment defended by saying that game is made by and for the adults. Neil Druckmann, the vice-president of Naughty Dog explained that they’re making a game about the cycle of violence and they’re making a statement about violent actions and the impact they have was for the player to feel repulsed by some of the violence they are committing themselves. So we don’t expect any major deleted cut scene or something of that sort. We can’t say anything for certain until we get a hold of the final game which was initially set to release on Feb 21, 2020.
The game was delayed to May 29, 2020, and Sony announced four editions namely standard, special, collectors, and an Ellie edition. Naughty Dog announced that the game is almost ready on April 2, 2020, but again got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, on April 27, 2020, announced a new release date of June 19, 2020, but on that same day, multiple videos showing major cut scenes and gameplay were leaked. After some days of investigation, Sony identified the leakers and that they were not affiliated with Sony or Naughty Dog.
The Last of Us Part II won 4 major awards and received special commendations for Graphics and Sound at the Game Critics Awards 2018. Though this game suffered one of the worst fates an upcoming game can endure as most of its major story elements are leaked online, people are still rolling on its hype train which goes on to show how much people love the storyline and the combat system of the original game. The introduction of better AI, new enemies, and the reveal of the unnamed woman from the original game will surely help the game reach new heights. All we can do right now is to keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best.
