One of the most anticipated game of this year ‘Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’ is set to be released in the Holiday 2020. And like every modern game titles, Ubisoft also features their games with post DLC updates for players to have more content to explore. By far as the news goes, Valhalla might feature a ‘Beowulf’ DLC which will work as a cherry topping on a cake. The main story of the game is based on 9th century A.D England and Norweigan Vikings. This story itself is a very vital part of old English history and English literature. The period has seen the rise of ‘English’ as a language in England. The story of Beowulf has its own amount of significance in literature. It is said to be the earliest and the greatest epic or heroic poem in the Old English literature.
The Story In Brief
Origin of Beowulf – The time when the kingdom of Spear Danes was without any king, a ship came sailing into their harbor filled with weapons of war and treasure. And in the midst of all this was a baby sleeping. No other men sailed the ship. That child was later named ‘Scyld’, who grew up to became a mighty warrior and led Spear Danes as their King. Sometime later, Danes was ruled by one of Scyld’s descendants King Hrothgar. The story of Beowulf Begins from there.
Hrothgar in his old age had built a mead hall near the sea called ‘Heorot’. It was said to be the most splendid hall in the whole world where the King and his men used to gather nightly for a feast and listen to the songs of the gleemen as a celebration. One night when everyone was sleeping in the hall, a giant monster named ‘Grendel’ broke entered the hall and killed like thirty of the king’s men and carried off their bodies to devour them in his lair under the sea. This horrific visit shook fear in everyone’s heart when they discovered that the monster can not be killed or harmed as no weapon was able to do any damage to him. His appalling visit was speedily repeated and for twelve winters Grendel’s raids continued leaving Heorot deserted and silent. This story fled all over the place and finally reached the land of Geats where a young and strong hero lived with his uncle King Hygelac. His name was “Beowulf”. He was fearless, strong, and went to visit his father’s friend’s kingdom, Spear Danes along with fourteen companions. He insists the king to hold another feast in Heorot thinking it will attract Grendel. The king agrees and after the feast was over, Beowulf and his companions stayed in the hall to spend the night. At midnight Grendel breaks into the hall and tore apart on of Beowulf’s companion into pieces. Then he looked at everyone and gave a monstrous laugh thinking of the feast he will have. He raised his hand to slam Beowulf only to found that it was now in the grip of this man. He tried to set his hand free with his inhuman strength but failed. A sudden fear struck his heart by observing a worthy opponent. He tried fighting out his way from the grips of the unknown man that possessed unbelievable strength. Tables, chairs, and other furniture broke in the hall with the ongoing fight but by no means was he able to set his hand free. Finally, he was able to find his way out but the struggle of the enormous strength of Beowulf caused his sinews to snap and a wound around his arm to tear open causing his arm to tear off while he manages to run into the sea where he died later from the wounds. The first victory for Beowulf and certainly not the last.
Beowulf’s next big challenge came the night after when they were celebrating their victory over Grendel in the hall with a feast with the king and his men. After the feast was over, at midnight another huge half-human creature, mother of Grendel, came lurking to avenge the murder of her offspring. Everyone gets ready to fight the monster but before they could do anything the monster entered the hall and seized one of the King’s adviser and ran away with him over the fens. When Beowulf came to know about this he prepared himself for another fight and followed the tracks of Grendel’s mother. She lived in a horrible cave under the seawater. Beowulf told his companions to wait on the shore while he himself sunk into the deep dark water when he finally found the cave where his enemy resides. Grendel’s mother on first glance dragged Beowulf deep inside the cave where his armor gets knocked by other sea monsters. He swings his swords killing other creatures but failed to harm Grendel’s mother. This time he gets a little worried by the strength of his opponent. The fight between these two gets large and Grendel’s mother seems to have the higher ground this time as Beowulf was not able to do any optimal damage to his enemy. After some time into the fight, Beowulf gets a glimpse of an old ‘magic’ sword buried among the other treasures in the cave. The sword was made by monsters long ago, very heavy for warriors to wield and Beowulf had a great struggle before he was able to raise the sword and with a whirl chops Grendel’s mother’s head off. Another victory for Beowulf. Further in the cave, Beowulf found the dead body of Grendel lying lifeless.
After this fight, sometime later Beowulf became the king of Spear Danes after the death of King Hrothgar and ruled the kingdom for about fourty years or so. The third or the last great fight that Beowulf was a part of, happened during the last part of his life. He along with his companions went into a quest into a cave where a bloodthirsty fire-wielding dragon resides. During this time Beowulf was very old along with a little downfall in his strength but his courage was ever so mighty. The fight with the dragon was a very long and harsh one where both struggle against each other’s great strength. But with great struggle and injuries obtained from this fight, Beowulf was finally able to slay the dragon’s heart with his sword. The fight resulted in the death of the dragon and leaving Beowulf heavily injured. The fire from the dragon has entered Beowulf’s lungs which caused the mighty soldier to lose his life. His funeral was associated with ship burial.
These are the three most important and vital challenges that Beowulf had to face in his life and we are eager to see it from the perspective of an Assasin’s Creed game. This will surely be one of our favorite season pass of the game if it is done right.
